Tolers Leather Depot in Old Town San Diego

A visit to Tolers Leather Depot in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is like walking into a saddle and tack shop of a bygone era. Established in 1973, Dennis and Heidi Toler have created a working artisan leather shop where the aroma of rich leather is the first experience you encounter. Handmade leather products are crafted on the premises by Dennis, who especially enjoys making 1860s style holsters. These holsters are hand stitched, tooled, oiled and wet formed to shape. Dennis also enjoys making saddle bags and knife sheaths. During the Gold Rush period of 1849, the common accessories for a man on the west coast was a black powder pistol on one hip and a knife on the other.
